The Blue Door Pub’s First Year Anniversary

Ok, so maybe it’s a plug but thought I’d share since this is one of our favorite burger joints:

This Friday, September 25th marks our 1 Year Anniversary! We’ve had an amazing time with an amazing group of neighbors and patrons and we want to express our thankfulness and gratitude. Beginning Monday, September 21st through our anniversary, we are offering these great deals:

Monday and Tuesday: Our Late Night Happy Hour lasts all day! This means whole orders of fries and tots are only $2, our deep fried pickles and beer-battered green beans are just $3.50, and our wings, all pound-and-a-half of them, are $5.50! Plus, all tap beers and all glasses of wine are $3 each!

Wednesday: Today only, we’re offering the Granny Apple Bliss Blucy! The fall harvest has been picked so we reached deep into our suggestion box to find this tremendous idea originally submitted by Bruce Becker during our last Blucy Of the Moment competition. We stuff silky smooth brie cheese in the middle of our burger and top it off with a sweet, delicious granny apple compote on top! Its dinner and dessert all in one!

Thursday: Five Buck Jiffy’s and a Surly Firkin! Voted by City Pages as the best burger of 2008, we’re offering the now infamous combination of peanut butter, bacon, and pepper jack cheese on a burger with your choice of hand-cut fries or tater tots for only $5! We’ve found the best way to wash down one of these taste sensations is with a pint of Surly – so we’re tapping a special firkin of Surly in time for dinner!

Friday: Blucy Twofers and a Summit Firkin! Of course, we’re going to save the best for the actual anniversary day. We’re offering two Blucy’s, our flagship burger stuffed with bleu cheese and minced garlic, for the price of one all day! And to help us celebrate the occasion, Summit has provided us with a firkin of their Horizon Red Ale dry hopped with Amarillo hops!

South Korea – Day 9 (photos) – Captain Troy Lightfield!

Still in Seoul on Thursday. We decided to visit one of two palaces in the area. We stopped by the first with the intention of watching the changing of the guard. A very cool ceremony consisting of full dressed guards in time appropriate dress. As we waiting for this show I moved closed to the main guard where I was approached by a Korean lady who spoke some English. At first I wasn’t real sure what she wanted or was trying to tell me but soon I realized she wanted ME to hit the large drum to signal the changing of the guard!!! AWESOME I think I replied and told her I would definitely love to!

They dressed me up in a captains uniform I was told and given instructions to “hit the drum like your hitting a baseball”. “No problem” I replied. After the guards marched in with the dress and instruments she gave me the go ahead. To say the people standing close were shocked would be putting it lightly! I hit that drum 3 times at a decent strength and a huge smile came over my face as I looked at all the people watching. Instant fame! I even had school kids coming up to me afterward asking where I was from.

Mom even dressed up afterward for some glamor shots. A perfect start to the day!

After that we headed to a huge beautiful palace, I will have to get the name from Takayla. During the tour of the palace he hit a culture museum in the area and Sarah scored another smashed penny machine. All in all one of our most memorable days.

South Korea – Day 8 (photos) – Off to Seoul and the War Museum

Today we bought our train tickets and headed to Seoul. It took us about 3 hours by train which beat the cheap alternative of riding a bus for over 7. Once there we got checked into our value motel and then headed for the South Korean War Museum. The Museum was full of war artifacts, weapons, stories, and machinery. Some of the real cool stuff was actually outside where they displayed tanks, planes and some very impressive monuments. Enjoy the pictures!

South Korea Day 7 (photos) Trip to Gyeongju National Park

Today we headed to Gyeongju, Gyeongiu is a major tourist destination for South Koreans as well as foreign visitors. It boasts the 1000 years of Shilla heritage with vast number of ancient ruins and archaeological sites found throughout the city.

We seen many of the Silla sites located in Gyeongju National Park such as the Royal Tomb Complex, the Cheomseongdae observatory, the Anapji royal pond garden, and the Gyerim forest. We also went to the Gyeongju National Museum which hosts many important artifacts and national treasures that have been excavated from sites within the city and surrounding areas.

The Lotus flowers were also blooming so we got to see them, definitely a beautiful unique flower.

South Korea Day 6 (photos) – A Day at the Beach

Today we decided to check out one of Busan’s main beaches, Haeundae. It was really fun to see South Koreans at the beach. A majority of them don’t even appear to have swimsuits on! We even seen one lady in her tube with high heels on. Another man decided he didn’t need swim trunks at all and was just strolling down the beach pantless.

From there we headed down the shoreline along the rocky side of the beach. There was a walkway that aloud us to be right on the rocks. It was a very scenic walk that took us past the mermaid statue, fishermen and an older gentleman that was bathing down on the rocks.

From there we headed to the Apec Center where in 2005 21 world leaders meant. From there we headed on an adventure to find the giant ferris wheel but all we managed to get done was buy a treat from a nice old lady that decided to park her vending truck right in the middle of the road!

South Korea – Day 5 (photos) – Haedong Yonggung Temple

Today we headed to Haedong Yonggung Temple. This temple is unique in that most of the Korean temples are in the hills. Haedong Yonggung is right on the shore of the East Sea. The rock shores and waves crashing down on them make for the perfect backdrop for a beautiful temple. Enjoy the pictures!

South Korean – Day 4 – Something Smells Fishy!

Our first big day as tourists! We put on some serious miles. After hanging out in Guri’s Bar the night before we may have been a little slower than normal, but we stepped up our game and had a great day.

We took our first ride on the Korean subway, pretty much what one would expect from a subway, very clean, busy, and full of all kinds of people. Our first stop was Busan Tower. Mount Yongdu Park, named for Mount Yongdu (Dragons Head), surrounds the tower and includes a monument to Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Admiral Yi was the greatest South Korean military commander of all time. With his brilliant naval maneuvers he is credited with saving the Korean people from Japanese invasion in 1592. Prior to that he was actually arrested for disobeying orders but released by the king after the Japanese had destroyed all but 13 of 133 Korean Naval vessels. Credited with inventing the Turtle Ship, an iron clad vessel, he used them to harass Japanese supply lines. The grounds were full of beautiful landscaping and a huge bell that is only rang on 4 important occasions including New Years Day and a flower clock.

Busan Tower is 120 Meters high and provides a wonderful view of the Busan South Port and the surrounding mountains and city. Sarah was thrilled to find a penny smashing machine and added a penny of Busan Tower to her collection!

After visiting Busan Tower we headed to the Jagalchi Fish Market. This is the countries largest fish market. It was full of all kinds of awesome sea creatures and elderly women. These women could skin live eel in about 5 seconds!! They sold everything, octopus, crab, all sorts of fish, eels, tuna, shrimp, prongs, squid, snails, shell fish, abalone and some things I will probably never know. There are restaurants above the fish market. Jake, Sarah and Takayla enjoyed a fresh crab and some Hite. It was delicious and served with Kimchi and not the hot butter American’s are used to. If one can get past the fishy smell it is quite a site to see.

After the fish market it was off to the other side of the market area. This place was scary. I have never seen so much junk in one place. Clothes, 4 billion pairs of socks, jewelery, purses, electronics, etc. An unbelievable amount of junk! With all this stuff we found nothing!!! It was truly overwhelming.

We headed back to Takayla’s at about 8:30 and CRASHED! I woke up with the Pig Flu and will have to sit in quarantine for the remainder of the trip.

South Korea – Day 3 (photos) – Eat, Drink and Be Merry

Day 3 found us lost in a huge department store and eating the “wrong” thing! Pictures are from Sarah and I’s try at eating by ourselves at The Korean Style Restaurant, EVERYONE else in the entire restaurant had soup with a little chicken in it except us. We later found out that it is one of 3 days of the year that everyone eats chicken.

Later we headed out to eat with Jake, Takayla, Mom and Chad, Takayla’s work collegue. Another good Korean style BBQ place where we enjoyed a ton of food and drink.

We then retired to the Guri Bar (review to come!), Jake and Takayla’s favorite Busan bar, and had a couple pitchers of beer and threw some darts. We’ll be back!

South Korea Trip – Day 2, Afternoon (photos) – We’re here!

Finally made it to South Korean, most of these pictures are of the restaurant that we went to. It was a Korean BBQ style I guess you would say. We ordered Samgyeopsal and cooked it over hot coals. Lots of sides to add to a lettuce leaf and enjoy. The girls thought it was spices but I had my Chuck Norris shirt on so was not fazed by the spiciness of the food (honestly didn’t think it that spicy)!
